Metro Awakening VR Coming To PSVR 2 In 2024
Vertigo Games has revealed Metro Awakening, the latest game in its long-running survival-stealth shooter series and the first VR title in the series. The news was shared as part of the latest PlayStation State of Play presentation. Metro Awakening is coming to PlayStation VR 2 is 2024.
Metro Awakening is the first VR title in the series and the first entry since 2019's Metro Exodus. While the trailer was light on story info, it did contain a ton of gameplay footage. The first-person shooting is now in VR, with a few different guns shown off.
Detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Metro Awakening is a prequel, taking place prior to the events of Metro 2033. The game follows Serdar, a doctor searching the post-apocalyptic Moscow metro tunnels for his wife. The tunnels are full of dangerous people and supernatural forces, in a story written by series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky.
"This origins story is so essential to me," said Glukhovsky. "It feels like returning to the foundations and roots of the series--now at the level that VR technology can bring."
The Metro series has thus far had three games, beginning with Metro 2033 well over a decade ago. The games were preceded by a series of novels by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky, who has been prosecuted and convicted in absentia by the Russian government for his criticism of the Ukraine invasion. Developer 4A Games--originally based in Kyiv, Ukraine--is now headquartered in Malta but does still maintain an office in its original location.
